Josh Hartnett To Be The Prince of Cool
Posted By: Jerrica

Sure, "Lucky Number Slevin" may have only taken in $7 million at the box office its opening weekend, but the movie has certainly brought Josh Hartnett into the spotlight, showcasing his versatility and potential as an actor. As Hartnett breaks away from the reputation of Hollywood heartthrob, he proves with each move that he is serious about his craft. With "Slevin" in wide release and Hartnett's other retro-noir project, Brian De Palma's "The Black Dahlia" with Scarlett Johansson, in post-production, the most recent development for Hartnett is that he has lined up another movie based on a true story, a biopic about American jazz musician Chet Baker, "The Prince of Cool," in which Hartnett will portray the legendary trumpet player himself.

This is actually a project surprisingly close to Hartnett's personal tastes. In an interview with FilmStew, though he is a proud jazz fan (classics like Miles Davis and John Coltraine among his favorites), Hartnett confessed, "I never really listened to Chet." It seems the interest runs in the family since his two little brothers, Jake and Joe, are jazz musicians themselves. In the true spirit of dedicating himself to the part, Hartnett will be taking trumpet lessons to prepare for the role. On an interesting note, his younger siblings have played the saxophone and drums since very early on, and Hartnett has always admired their skill.

Now, with his comeback on a clean slate, having happily shed the teen idol syndrome that accumulated and followed him after his breakout role in Michael Bay's "Pearl Harbor," Hartnett is choosing his roles for their merit and substance. "Prince of Cool" will be directed by Bruce Beresford ("Paradise Road" and the Academy Award-winning "Driving Miss Daisy") and will tell a tale of drug addiction and music. The theme rings familiar because it's been the subject of two successful films in recent years, "Ray" and "Walk The Line," the stories of musicians Ray Charles and Johnny Cash.

Chet Baker, a musician who never learned to read music, playing mostly by ear, was born in Oklahoma in 1929. He spent much of his life addicted to heroin, and he died in 1988 in Amsterdam, having fallen from a window. His death is still something of a mystery, peppered with a few conspiracy theories, for the most part surrounding his infamous troubles connected to his drug use. One of his most notable signature songs was "My Funny Valentine." In 1988, a documentary about his life called "Let’s Get Lost," named after his song of the same title and directed by Bruce Weber, was nominated for an Oscar. Since "Prince of Cool" is only just beginning to come together in the pre-production stages, time will tell what Beresford and Hartnett make of Baker's story.
